Offshore Shopify Developers: How UK Brands Hire Them Without Getting Burned

Laptop showing a team video call beside a houseplant, the daily check-in with an offshore Shopify developer.

Quick answer: Hire offshore Shopify developers the way you would hire a UK agency, only with more paperwork. Inspect live stores they built, get a fixed price against a written scope, pay against milestones you can see, give access through a collaborator account and take the copyright by signed assignment. The time difference with Pakistan works in your favour if the team covers your morning and puts every decision in writing.

Offshore Shopify developers can rebuild a UK store for far less than a London agency quote, and plenty of founders have a horror story about the other outcome. Geography rarely causes the failure. Missing paperwork does: nobody wrote down the scope, the developer kept the owner login, or the contract never moved the copyright.

This guide sets out how a UK direct-to-consumer brand should judge an offshore partner, from the criteria that matter to the questions for the first call, the red flags and the contract terms that protect you.

We run Loop2Tech, a Shopify and web studio in Karachi, Pakistan, so we sit on the other side of this decision every week. Where our own practice helps, we say so. Where it doesn't, we tell you what to ask anyone.

Why UK brands look offshore for Shopify work

Online sales carry a large share of UK retail. The Office for National Statistics put internet sales at 28.3% of all retail sales in September 2026. For a DTC brand, the store is the shop floor, and every slow week of a rebuild costs orders.

Offshore teams solve two problems at once: cost and capacity. A team in Karachi can quote a fixed price for a theme rebuild that a UK agency would bill by the day, and it can often start this month rather than next quarter. Our Shopify development agency runs on that model: a written scope, a fixed price and a named timeline.

The risk sits elsewhere. Distance makes weak process expensive. A local agency that misreads your brief can come in for a workshop. An offshore team that misreads it can ship the wrong thing for a fortnight before anyone notices. So the criteria below lean on process and evidence, not price.

Decision criteria for choosing an offshore Shopify partner

Live stores you can inspect

Ask for three live Shopify stores the team built or rebuilt, with the URL and a line on what they did for each. Open them on your phone. Check the collection pages, the cart and the load speed. Screenshots prove nothing. A live store shows whether the code still holds up under real apps and real stock.

Reviews matter, but read them for specifics. A review that names a deadline met or a migration finished tells you more than five stars and a smiley face. If an agency has few third-party reviews, a live store and a conversation with a past client do the same job.

Working hours that cover your morning

Pakistan sits five hours ahead of the UK in winter and four hours ahead during British Summer Time. A Karachi team that works until 7pm local time covers your morning until 2pm in winter and 3pm in summer. That window suits a daily check-in and same-day answers.

Ask every candidate for their overlap hours in writing, and ask who answers messages outside them. A team that won't commit to a window will not keep one.

Shopify depth, not general web skills

Online Store 2.0 sections, metafields, Liquid and Shopify Markets for UK and EU pricing all take practice. A general web developer can learn them, just not on your budget. Ask what they would build as a theme section and what they would leave to an app.

A strong answer weighs speed against convenience, because every app adds scripts to every page. Our guide to Shopify speed optimisation explains why that trade-off decides how fast your store feels.

Conversion thinking, not only design

Baymard Institute puts the average documented cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, drawn from 50 studies. A partner who only talks about the homepage has missed where the money leaks. Expect them to raise the product page, the cart and delivery costs without you asking.

A team, not one freelancer

One freelancer means one point of failure. Illness, a better-paid contract or a power cut can stop your project for a week. A small team can cover for itself. We compare the two options, including cost, in our piece on hiring a Shopify freelancer or an agency.

Fixed scope and milestone payments

A fixed price against a written scope puts the overrun risk on the agency. Hourly billing from a team you can't watch puts it on you. Pay in stages tied to things you can click: a staging theme, the product and collection templates, then launch.

Access through collaborator accounts

Shopify built collaborator accounts for exactly this job. According to Shopify's guidance on collaborator accounts, collaborators don't count towards your staff limit, you decide which permissions they get, and you can remove them permanently when the work ends. A developer who asks for your owner login instead has told you how they treat security.

Questions to ask an offshore Shopify agency before you sign

Send these before the first call, then listen for how the agency answers as much as what it says. Vague answers on the first call turn into vague invoices later.

  1. Which three live Shopify stores did you build or rebuild, and what exactly did you change on each?
  2. Who will write the code, and will that person join our calls?
  3. Which hours do you work in UK time, and who replies outside them?
  4. Will you quote a fixed price against a written scope, and how do you price changes?
  5. How do you split payments, and what will we see at each milestone?
  6. Will you work through a collaborator account, and which permissions do you need?
  7. Will you assign the copyright in the theme code to us in a signed document?
  8. Which of our current apps would you remove, and which would you replace with theme code?
  9. How will you protect our rankings during the rebuild?
  10. What does support cost after launch, and how quickly do you respond?

Red flags that predict a bad project

Most failed offshore builds showed their warning signs before anyone signed. Walk away, or at least slow down, when you see these:

  • A price before they have looked at your store, your theme or your catalogue.
  • A request for your owner login or your password.
  • No live stores, only design mock-ups or a template demo.
  • Full payment up front, or a large deposit with no milestone attached.
  • Vague answers when you ask who owns the code.
  • A plan that fixes every problem with another app.

That last flag comes from our own audits. When we open a Shopify theme, we often find code from apps the owner uninstalled months earlier still loading on every page. Removing an app doesn't always remove the snippets it wrote into the theme. A partner who installs apps casually leaves you that residue, and you pay for it in speed.

Contract terms UK brands should insist on

Under UK law, the person who creates a work owns its copyright first, unless they create it as your employee. An offshore agency isn't your employee. The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 also makes an assignment of copyright ineffective unless the assignor signs it in writing, under section 90(3).

So your contract needs a clause in which the agency assigns all copyright in the theme code and designs to you, signed on its behalf, taking effect on final payment. Carve out third-party code, such as the base theme's own licence and app code, because the agency never owned it and can't assign it.

Scope, change control and acceptance

The scope document should list every template, integration and migration task. Add a change process: any new item gets a written price and date before work starts. Define acceptance too, so both sides know how long you have to test a milestone before it counts as signed off.

Payment milestones tied to deliverables

Link each payment to a deliverable you can check yourself. A common pattern runs a deposit to start, a payment when the staging theme passes your review, and the balance at launch. Hold the final payment until the store runs live and the copyright assignment carries a signature.

Access, data and exit

Write in that the agency works through a collaborator account, removes its own access at handover, and returns every file, login and app credential it created. If the developer will touch customer data, ask how they handle UK GDPR international transfers before they see a single order.

Support and warranty

Agree a warranty period in which the agency fixes its own bugs at no charge, then a written rate for later work. Put the response time in the contract, not in an email.

What a good proposal contains

A proposal worth signing reads like a plan, not a pitch. Expect to see:

  • A summary of your store as it stands, covering theme, apps and speed, which proves they looked.
  • The scope, template by template, with integrations and any migration listed.
  • A fixed price, the payment milestones and what triggers each one.
  • Dates for staging, your review and launch.
  • Named people: who designs, who builds and who manages the project.
  • How they will protect rankings, including redirects, metadata and structured data.
  • Copyright, access and support terms, or a draft contract.

If the proposal skips the search line, ask about it. A rebuild that drops your redirects can wipe out rankings you spent years building. Our guide to Shopify collection page SEO covers the pages that usually carry those rankings, and our Shopify launch guide covers the checks a launch plan should include.

Loop2Tech as an offshore Shopify development agency for UK brands

Loop2Tech builds Shopify stores from Karachi, Pakistan, and we publish our prices instead of hiding them behind a call. Our pricing page lists a store setup on a premium theme at US$650 over three to four weeks, and a custom Online Store 2.0 store at US$1,800 over about six to eight weeks. Custom apps and migrations start at US$1,200.

We invoice in US dollars, so your sterling cost moves with the exchange rate on the day you pay. Every build starts from a written scope at a fixed price, with payments tied to milestones on larger projects.

We work through a Shopify collaborator account with only the permissions the job needs, and we hand the access back at the end. For proof of the work, read our write-up of a Shopify store rebuild for a lifestyle brand, which covers the problem, what we changed and the timeline. Then put every question on the list above to us, as you would to anyone.

If you want the same team to grow the store's search traffic after launch, our AEO, GEO and SEO service costs US$450 a month with a three-month minimum.

Hiring offshore without getting burned

Offshore Shopify developers work well for UK brands when the process does the job that proximity used to do.

Inspect live stores, get a fixed scope, pay against milestones you can click through, keep the owner login to yourself and take the copyright by signed assignment. Get the overlap hours in writing before you sign.

If you would like a Karachi team to quote against that standard, read how our Shopify development service works, then send us your store URL and what you want changed. We will reply with a written scope, a fixed price and a timeline, and you can hold us to every line.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find an offshore Shopify agency with good reviews for my UK brand?

Read reviews for specifics, such as deadlines met and migrations finished, then check live stores the agency built and speak to a past client. Loop2Tech, a Shopify studio in Karachi, Pakistan, publishes its prices and a project write-up so you can judge the work before you call.

How much do offshore Shopify developers cost?

Prices vary by team and scope, so compare written quotes against the same brief. Loop2Tech charges US$650 for a store setup on a premium theme and US$1,800 for a custom Online Store 2.0 store, with custom apps and migrations from US$1,200.

Who owns the code when an offshore developer builds my Shopify theme?

The developer owns the copyright first unless they work for you as an employee. Under UK law, an assignment only takes effect when the assignor signs it in writing, so put a signed copyright assignment in your contract that takes effect on final payment.

Is the time difference with Pakistan a problem for UK brands?

Usually not. Pakistan runs five hours ahead of the UK in winter and four hours ahead in summer, so a Karachi team working until 7pm covers your morning. Ask for the overlap hours in writing before you sign.

Should I give an offshore developer my Shopify login?

No. Use a collaborator account instead. It doesn't count towards your staff limit, you choose the permissions, and you can remove it permanently when the work ends. Any developer who insists on your owner login is a red flag.
