What Is Assistive Agent Optimization (AAO)? AAO vs SEO, AEO and GEO

A white cartoon robot with an AI badge on its chest typing on a small blue laptop.

Quick answer: Assistive agent optimization (AAO) is the work of making your business the one an AI agent picks when it acts for a customer: booking, comparing, adding to a cart or shortlisting a supplier with little or no human help. The term was popularised by Jason Barnard of Kalicube in February 2026. It is not a replacement for SEO, AEO or GEO. It adds one layer on top: agents have to be able to reach your site, read it, trust it and complete a task on it.

Every year search gets a new acronym. SEO got you found, AEO got you quoted, GEO got you cited by ChatGPT and Gemini. AAO is the latest, and unlike some of the others it describes something real: AI assistants that no longer just answer, but act. They open your site, read your prices, fill in your form and hand the customer a result.

We run Loop2Tech, a studio based in Karachi, Pakistan, that sells SEO, AEO and GEO to businesses worldwide. We researched where AAO came from and what the AI companies themselves say their agents need. This guide separates what is proven from what is still a sales pitch.

Where the term AAO came from

The phrase "assistive agent optimization" comes from Jason Barnard, founder of Kalicube. The earliest dated use we could verify is his Search Engine Land column of 24 February 2026, which sums AAO up as being chosen "when no human is in the loop". Kalicube says he coined it in 2025, but the 2025 article it points to uses "assistive engine optimization" instead, so we could not confirm the earlier date.

The idea itself is older than the acronym. Netlify's CEO Mathias Biilmann wrote about "agent experience" (AX) in January 2025, and a group of researchers led by Luciano Floridi published a paper on agentic AI optimisation in April 2025. They all describe the same shift: software agents becoming users of your website.

AAO vs SEO, AEO and GEO

Barnard describes the disciplines as a ladder, each one asking more of your business than the last:

DisciplineGoalWho decidesWhat you see
SEOBe foundA person scanning search resultsRankings and clicks
AEOBe the answerGoogle's AI Overviews and answer boxesYour page quoted in the answer
GEOBe cited and recommendedChatGPT, Gemini, PerplexityYour brand named as a source or option
AAOBe chosenAn AI agent acting for the customerA booking, enquiry or order the agent completed

Barnard calls AAO "a roof" over the others rather than a rebrand. In practice the layers stack: an agent that cannot find you through search, and cannot trust what AI answers say about you, will never get as far as choosing you. Are AI agents actually acting on websites yet?

Yes, though the products change fast. In 2026 alone:

  • OpenAI retired its ChatGPT Atlas browser in August 2026 and folded its browsing agent into ChatGPT Work, which runs a cloud browser that can sign in to websites and fill in forms for the user.
  • Google says checkout through its Universal Commerce Protocol is live for hundreds of thousands of brands across Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app, and launched a Universal Cart in the US on 15 October 2026.
  • OpenAI has moved away from its standalone Instant Checkout. ChatGPT shopping now uses merchant product feeds to recommend products and sends the buyer to finish on the merchant's own site, in the US only for now.
  • Cloudflare reports that fewer than half of all HTML page requests now come from a human. The rest are crawlers, tools and agents.

So agents are real and growing. What is not yet proven is that any one "AAO tactic" moves sales. Nobody selling AAO, including us, has published before and after results yet. Treat anyone who says otherwise with care.

What AI agents actually need from your website

Most of the useful advice comes from the platforms' own developer documents, not from agency blogs. Here is what they say.

1. Let the right bots in

AI companies run several bots: some train models, some index pages for AI search, and some fetch a page because a user asked. OpenAI says that if you block its search bot, your site will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. The most common problem we see is not robots.txt at all, but a firewall, security plugin or CDN quietly returning errors to AI agents. Check your server logs as well as your robots.txt.

2. Build pages a machine can operate

Chrome's Lighthouse audit now has an experimental agentic browsing section, and it states that agents rely on the accessibility tree as their primary data model. That means proper labels on every button and form field, real HTML elements instead of clickable divs, and no layout that jumps while the page loads. Agents from OpenAI and Anthropic also work from screenshots, so button text has to be readable and controls cannot hide behind hover menus. The good news: this is the same work as making your site accessible to people, which you should be doing anyway.

3. Put the facts in plain text

An agent comparing suppliers needs your prices, service areas, stock, delivery times and policies, written on the page as text. Google states there are no special optimizations necessary for its AI features beyond good SEO, and that structured data should match what is visible on the page. Our guide to schema markup that actually matters covers which types to use.

4. Keep product feeds clean if you sell online

For shops, agents shop from feeds, not from your product pages. OpenAI's commerce protocol and Google's Merchant Center both run on structured product data: title, price, availability, brand, images and identifiers. When we checked 162 Shopify brands, only 39% gave agents a price, stock status and barcode together.

5. Make forms and checkout agent friendly

Reputable agents will not solve CAPTCHAs, and they stop for a human at logins and payments. Keep CAPTCHAs off simple enquiry forms, offer guest checkout, and make the step where a person confirms payment obvious. A proposed standard called WebMCP goes further and lets a site hand agents ready-made actions such as "search products" or "build a cart". It is still experimental in Chrome, but Cloudflare switched it on for almost 100,000 Commerce.com stores in September 2026.

6. Measure agent visits

Your analytics probably miscounts agents. Server or CDN logs show them by name: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, PerplexityBot and Google-Agent. Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the normal Search Console report, so you will not see it separately there. Our guide to measuring AI citations covers the answer side.

What to skip

  • Buying an "AAO package" that is your SEO retainer renamed. Ask what changes on your site that would not change under good technical SEO.
  • Expecting llms.txt to do the job. It is cheap to add, but we found no evidence that any AI engine uses it to decide who to cite or choose. Our post on what llms.txt does explains why.
  • Custom agent servers for a five-page site. Tools like MCP servers make sense when you have real actions to offer, such as bookings, quotes or live stock. For most small businesses, clean pages and open bot access come first.
  • Guarantees. Nobody controls which business an AI agent picks.

A quick AAO checklist

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to find and compare businesses like yours. Note who gets picked and why.
  2. Check robots.txt and your firewall for blocked AI search bots and agents.
  3. Run Chrome Lighthouse and fix missing labels, broken roles and layout shift.
  4. Put prices, areas, hours and policies on your pages as plain text, with matching structured data.
  5. If you sell products, fix your Merchant Center and product feed first.
  6. Remove CAPTCHAs from simple forms and keep the payment step clear.
  7. Read your server logs monthly for AI agent visits.

Most of this list sits inside a good technical SEO checklist. That is the honest summary of AAO in 2026: a new name for the moment agents start acting, built on work that already pays off for search and for people.

Frequently asked questions

What does AAO stand for in SEO?

In SEO, AAO stands for assistive agent optimization: making your business easy for AI agents to find, understand, trust and act on when they work for a customer. Outside marketing, AAO usually means the American Academy of Ophthalmology or the American Association of Orthodontists, so write the full phrase when you search for it.

Who coined assistive agent optimization?

Jason Barnard of Kalicube. The earliest dated public use we found is his Search Engine Land column of 24 February 2026. Related ideas, such as Netlify's agent experience (AX) and academic work on agentic AI optimisation, appeared in 2025.

Is AAO different from GEO?

Yes. GEO is about being cited or recommended in an AI answer that a person reads. AAO is about being chosen when an AI agent acts on its own, for example booking or buying. AAO builds on GEO: an agent still relies on what AI systems already know and trust about you.

Do I need AAO if I already do SEO?

Good technical SEO covers most of it. The extra work is checking that AI agents are not blocked, that your forms and checkout work for software as well as people, and, for shops, that your product feeds are complete. Google itself says its AI features need no special optimization beyond SEO.

Does llms.txt help with AAO?

Not in any way that has been shown. It is cheap and harmless to add, and some developer tools read it, but we found no evidence that AI engines use it to decide which businesses to cite or choose.
