Quick answer: Upwork says Shopify developers on its marketplace typically charge $15 to $29 an hour, with beginners around $15, intermediate developers around $33 and experts around $95. Rates rise with experience and with where the developer lives: compiled averages put general developers at roughly $95 to $110 an hour in the US against $30 to $50 in India. The hourly rate matters less than the total, so compare fixed quotes against the same written scope.
Search for a Shopify developer's hourly rate and you will find answers from $15 to $200. Both ends are real. A beginner on a freelance marketplace and a senior Shopify Plus specialist in New York are doing different jobs at different risk, and they price it that way.
This guide sets out what the published numbers actually say, where they come from, how rates change by country and how to turn an hourly rate into the number you care about: the cost of your store.
We run Loop2Tech, a Shopify studio based in Karachi, Pakistan, that works with clients worldwide. We quote fixed prices rather than hourly rates, and we explain why further down. Where our own practice helps, we say so. Where it doesn't, we point you to the data.
What Shopify developers charge per hour in 2026
The most direct public figure comes from Upwork itself. Its Shopify developer cost page says Shopify developers on Upwork cost $15 to $29 an hour, and lists the rates they typically charge by level:
| Experience level | Typical rate on Upwork | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | $15 an hour | Theme settings, app installs, small layout fixes |
| Intermediate | $33 an hour | Custom sections, Liquid edits, store setup on a premium theme |
| Expert | $95 an hour | Custom themes, apps, migrations, Shopify Plus and checkout work |
Read those numbers carefully. Upwork describes them as typical ranges from certain historical contracts worldwide, and notes that what clients pay is subject to negotiation. They mix every country on the platform, so the median leans towards lower-cost regions.
For a benchmark outside freelance marketplaces, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the 2025 median pay for web developers and digital designers at $47.85 an hour, or $99,520 a year. That is what an employee earns, not what an agency bills. Once you add benefits, tax, tools, management and profit, an agency's hourly rate for the same person lands well above it.
Shopify developer rates by country
No independent survey publishes Shopify-specific hourly rates country by country. The closest thing is compiled data on general software developers. An index.dev roundup of freelance developer rates, published in May 2026 and compiled from several hiring sites, gives these average bands:
| Country | Average hourly rate (general developers) |
|---|---|
| United States | $95 to $110 |
| Canada | $85 to $100 |
| United Kingdom | $75 to $95 |
| Germany | $70 to $85 |
| Brazil | $30 to $55 |
| India | $30 to $50 |
| Ukraine | $25 to $35 |
| Philippines | $20 to $35 |
Treat this as a map of relative cost, not a price list. The figures cover developers in general rather than Shopify specialists, blend junior and senior people, and come from hiring platforms that sell access to those developers. The roundup doesn't list Pakistan, and we haven't found a published hourly figure for Pakistan we would trust enough to quote.
Two patterns hold across every source we checked. Rates in North America and Western Europe run two to four times those in South Asia, Southeast Asia and Latin America. And the gap narrows at the senior end, because experienced Shopify developers anywhere can sell to clients everywhere.
What pushes a Shopify developer's rate up or down
Shopify depth
Online Store 2.0 sections, metafields, Liquid, Shopify Functions and Shopify Markets all take practice. A general web developer can learn them on your project, at your expense. A developer who has already built a dozen custom themes charges more per hour and usually needs far fewer hours.
The type of work
Changing theme settings is beginner work. Building a custom theme section is intermediate work. Writing a custom app, migrating from WooCommerce or Magento, or working on Shopify Plus checkout extensibility is expert work. Price the job by its hardest part, not its average part.
Freelancer, agency or in-house
A freelancer's rate covers one person. An agency's rate covers a team that can review code, cover holidays and keep going if one developer leaves. That costs more per hour but lowers the risk that your launch stalls. We compare the two in more depth in our guide to hiring a Shopify freelancer or an agency.
Location and time zone
Where a developer lives sets their cost of living, which sets their floor. It also sets the hours they can talk to you. A team five to ten hours ahead can work while you sleep and hand over each morning, which only works if they put every decision in writing.
Urgency
Rush work costs more everywhere. If your store has to launch before a sale date, expect a premium, or protect yourself by cutting scope rather than paying for overtime.
Hourly rate versus the real cost of your store
An hourly rate is only half the sum. The other half is how many hours the developer needs, and you can't see that in advance. A worked example makes the point. Suppose a store setup takes an intermediate developer 40 hours. At Upwork's typical intermediate rate of $33, that's $1,320. Give the same job to a beginner who needs twice as long and gets stuck on the hard parts, and the cheaper rate can cost more.
Hourly billing also moves the overrun risk onto you. If the developer underestimates, you pay for the extra time. With a fixed price against a written scope, the developer carries that risk, so they have every reason to estimate honestly.
Hourly still makes sense for open-ended work: ongoing fixes, small changes you can't define upfront, or a retainer where you buy a block of time each month. For anything with a clear finish line, such as a store build, a redesign or a migration, ask for a fixed price.
Whichever way you pay, give the developer a Shopify collaborator account rather than your owner login. You choose its permissions and can remove it when the work ends.
How to compare quotes from Shopify developers
- Write a short scope first: which pages, which features, which apps and any data to migrate.
- Send the same scope to every candidate so the quotes are comparable.
- Ask each one for a fixed price, or an hourly rate with an estimate of hours and a cap.
- Check three live stores each candidate built, on your phone, before you weigh the price.
- Ask what is not included: design, copywriting, app subscriptions and support after launch are common gaps.
- Agree payment milestones tied to work you can click through, such as a staging theme.
If two quotes differ by a factor of three, the cheaper one has usually left something out. Ask what, before you choose. Our breakdown of Shopify store costs by type of build shows which items quotes most often skip.
What Loop2Tech charges instead of an hourly rate
We publish fixed package prices instead of an hourly rate, because a fixed price is the number our clients actually budget for. All of them are on our pricing page:
- Store setup on a premium theme: US$650, in three to four weeks.
- Custom Online Store 2.0 store: US$1,800, in about six to eight weeks.
- Custom app or migration: from US$1,200, quoted against scope.
- AEO, GEO and SEO after launch: US$450 a month.
Each build starts from a written scope, and we work through a collaborator account with only the permissions the job needs. Our Shopify development agency page explains what each package includes. If you are weighing an offshore team for the first time, our guide to hiring offshore Shopify developers covers the checks and contract terms that protect you.
Choosing on value, not the hourly rate
Shopify developer rates in 2026 run from about $15 an hour for a beginner on a marketplace to $95 and well beyond for an expert, and country explains much of the gap. But the rate is only an input. The number that matters is what your store costs to build and run, and whether it ships on time.
Write the scope, get comparable quotes, check live work and prefer a fixed price for anything with a finish line. If you would like a quote against that standard, see how our Shopify development service works, then send us your store URL and what you want built. We will reply with a written scope, a fixed price and a timeline.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Shopify developer charge per hour?
Upwork says Shopify developers on its marketplace typically charge $15 to $29 an hour, with beginners around $15, intermediate developers around $33 and experts around $95. Agencies and developers in the US, Canada and Western Europe usually charge more, because their labor costs are higher.
Why do Shopify developer rates vary so much by country?
Cost of living sets each developer's minimum rate. Compiled averages for general developers put the US at about $95 to $110 an hour and India at about $30 to $50. The gap is smaller for senior Shopify specialists, who can sell to clients in any country.
Is it cheaper to pay a Shopify developer hourly or a fixed price?
For work with a clear finish line, such as a store build, redesign or migration, a fixed price against a written scope is usually safer, because the developer carries the risk of going over. Hourly suits open-ended fixes and monthly support.
How many hours does a Shopify store take to build?
It depends on the scope. A store on a premium theme with standard pages is a small job; a custom theme, an app or a migration from another platform takes much longer. Ask each developer for an estimate of hours against the same written scope, or for a fixed price.
Does Loop2Tech charge by the hour for Shopify work?
No. Loop2Tech, a Shopify studio based in Karachi, Pakistan, publishes fixed prices: US$650 for a store setup on a premium theme, US$1,800 for a custom Online Store 2.0 store, and from US$1,200 for a custom app or migration.
