A Karachi shopfront beside a phone showing an empty business listing, illustrating why local SEO for small businesses fails in Pakistan

Quick answer: Pakistani small businesses rarely lose search visibility because of weak content. They lose it at the entity layer: no verified Google Business Profile, a phone number written four different ways across the site, an address Google cannot parse, and no working way to contact the business. Google states that local results depend primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence, and all three of those are starved when the underlying business data is inconsistent.

Pakistan crossed 116 million internet users in January 2025, a penetration rate of 45.7 percent, according to DataReportal's Digital 2025 report. The customers are online. Yet across roughly 30 Pakistani business websites we audited at Loop2Tech in Karachi this year, the pattern was almost monotonous: the sites were not badly written, they were badly wired. Owners were being sold blog packages and backlink bundles while their business had no verifiable identity for Google to rank in the first place. This post covers what actually blocks local SEO for small businesses in Pakistan, in the order those blocks need clearing.

Why Pakistani small businesses lose search before they publish a word

Search engines rank entities, not documents. An entity is a real-world thing Google holds a confident record of: a business, a person, a product, with attributes it has cross-verified from several independent sources. Content optimization operates on top of that record. If the record does not exist, there is nothing for the optimization to attach to.

This is where the Pakistani SMB market diverges sharply from the US and UK markets that most SEO advice is written for. In those markets, a business almost always arrives at SEO already carrying a verified Google Business Profile, a consistent registered address, and a decade of directory citations accumulated passively. The entity exists. The work is competitive.

In Pakistan that foundation is frequently absent. The business is real, established, sometimes decades old, with a warehouse and a payroll and genuine customers, and Google holds close to no structured record of it. Publishing more content against a nonexistent entity is spending money on the wrong layer. We cover the ranking mechanics of the map pack itself in our guide to local SEO in Karachi and the Google local pack.

The five structural failures we found again and again

These five issues accounted for the overwhelming majority of lost search visibility across our audit sample. None of them are content problems, and all five are fixable in weeks rather than quarters.

The business has no verified Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile is the free listing that feeds Google Maps, the local pack, and the knowledge panel on the right of a branded search. Google's own documentation states that local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence, and the profile is the single record all three are calculated against. No profile means no map pack entry, regardless of how strong the website is. Many of the businesses we audited had a profile auto-generated from user submissions that nobody had ever claimed, which is worse than none: it carries wrong hours, an old address, and an unanswered review.

The phone number is written four different ways

This one is specific to Pakistan and it is everywhere. A single business will write 0300 1234567 in the header, +92-300-1234567 in the footer, 92 300 1234567 on the contact page, and a landline with no city code on the WhatsApp button. Google treats each variant as a weaker signal for the same entity. On one Pakistani manufacturer's site we audited last month, the header carried a valid UAE mobile prefix while the footer carried a prefix that does not exist in the UAE numbering plan. Every visitor who tapped the footer number reached nothing, and had done for as long as the site had been live.

The address does not fit the fields Google expects

Pakistani commercial addresses are structured around blocks, phases, sectors, and named roads: Block 6 PECHS, Phase 5 DHA, Gulberg III. Google's PostalAddress schema expects streetAddress, addressLocality, addressRegion, and postalCode. Most Pakistani sites either dump the entire address into one string or omit the markup entirely, so Google is left inferring the location from plain text. Postal codes compound it further, because they are inconsistently used in practice and often simply left blank.

There is no functioning way to contact the business

We audited a business-to-business scaffolding manufacturer with clean schema, correct heading structure, alt text on every image, and a 3.4 second load time. It had zero contact forms anywhere on the site. A construction firm wanting a quote had to copy a number and open a separate application. Search visibility is worthless when the conversion path is missing, and Google increasingly reads engagement signals that a dead-end page cannot generate.

The website is rented rather than owned

A meaningful share of the businesses we reviewed were operating on a subdomain of a page builder, at addresses like brandname.my.canva.site. All authority earned by that page accrues to the builder's root domain, not the business. The business cannot install analytics properly, cannot control its own redirects, and cannot move without losing everything. Our post on the signs a business needs a website rebuild covers when this becomes urgent.

What blocks visibility compared with what agencies typically sell

The gap below is the commercial heart of the problem. The left column is what our audits found broken. The right column is what those same businesses were being quoted for.

What actually blocks visibility What is commonly sold Cost to fix properly
Unclaimed or missing Google Business Profile Monthly blog articles Free, one to two weeks of verification
Inconsistent name, address, and phone data Backlink packages A few hours of work across the site
Missing LocalBusiness and PostalAddress schema Keyword density reports One development day
No contact form or enquiry path Social media management One development day
Site hosted on a builder subdomain Paid search campaigns A migration, priced as a project

Nothing in the right column is inherently useless. All of it is premature when the left column is unresolved. If you are currently evaluating proposals, our guide to choosing an SEO agency in Pakistan sets out the questions that separate the two approaches.

How to repair the entity layer, in order

Work this sequence top to bottom. Each step compounds the one before it, and skipping ahead wastes the effort spent on later items.

  1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Use the exact legal business name, no keyword stuffing in the title, correct primary category, real opening hours.
  2. Choose one canonical format for your phone number and address. Write the phone in international format, for example +92 21 1234567. Then find and replace every variant across the website, the profile, and every directory.
  3. Add LocalBusiness schema with a properly split PostalAddress. Break the address into its component fields rather than one string.
  4. Install a contact form and a WhatsApp link on every page. In the Pakistani market WhatsApp is not optional, it is the primary channel.
  5. Verify the site is crawlable and indexed. Submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and confirm pages are actually indexed, not merely discovered.
  6. Then, and only then, begin content work.

Here is the address markup pattern that works for a Karachi business, with the fields split the way Google expects:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "LocalBusiness",
  "name": "Exact Registered Business Name",
  "telephone": "+92 21 1234567",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "Office 4, Plot 12-C, Khayaban-e-Bukhari",
    "addressLocality": "Karachi",
    "addressRegion": "Sindh",
    "postalCode": "75500",
    "addressCountry": "PK"
  },
  "geo": {
    "@type": "GeoCoordinates",
    "latitude": "24.8607",
    "longitude": "67.0011"
  }
}

The geo block matters more in Pakistan than elsewhere, because street-level geocoding is unreliable here and explicit coordinates remove the guesswork. For a wider view of which markup types earn their place, see our breakdown of the schema types that actually matter.

Why AI search raises the cost of a broken entity

Answer engines make this problem more expensive, not less. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, and Perplexity all resolve a query to entities before they retrieve anything, and a business with contradictory records across its own site is unlikely to be resolved confidently enough to cite. Traditional search would still rank a messy site at position seven. A generative engine simply omits it.

The GEO study from Princeton, Georgia Tech, and IIT Delhi found that adding statistics, citations, and quotations lifted generative-engine visibility by up to 40 percent for the sources tested. That finding assumes the source is already retrievable. A business whose own pages disagree about its phone number never reaches the stage where content quality is assessed.

This is the practical distinction between optimizing for rankings and optimizing for citations, which we set out in AEO compared with GEO and SEO. Building the underlying record is covered in our guide to entity SEO and knowledge graph presence.

How to tell whether this is your problem

Run three checks today. Each takes under a minute and each is unambiguous.

First, search your exact business name in Google. If no knowledge panel appears on the right, your entity record is weak or absent. Second, open your own website and compare the phone number in the header against the one in the footer, then against your Google listing. Any difference is a live defect. Third, open your site on a phone and try to send an enquiry. If it takes more than two taps, you are losing enquiries you never see recorded.

When those three come back clean, the technical layer is worth auditing properly. Our technical SEO checklist covers the ten fixes that move rankings once the foundation holds, and our free website audit tool reports the machine-checkable ones automatically. For a worked example of an established Pakistani business rebuilt on owned infrastructure, see our retail point of sale and storefront project.

We stopped opening engagements with keyword research two years ago. We now open with an entity audit, because on most Pakistani accounts the keyword research produced a plan the business could not act on. That change is the single largest improvement we have made to how our AEO, GEO and SEO work performs in this market.

Conclusion

Claim your Google Business Profile this week if you have not already, and fix its category and hours while you are in there. Pick one canonical format for your phone number and address, then enforce it across every page, every listing, and every social profile you control. Add a contact form and a WhatsApp link before you commission a single article. These three moves cost almost nothing and they are the precondition for everything else working.

If you want the diagnosis done properly rather than guessed at, our AEO, GEO and SEO services start with a full entity and technical audit. Tell us your domain and we will tell you what is actually blocking you.

Frequently asked questions

What is local SEO for small businesses?

Local SEO for small businesses is the practice of making a business findable in geographically bounded searches, such as Google Maps results, the local pack, and queries containing a city or the phrase "near me". It centres on a verified Google Business Profile, consistent name, address, and phone data across the web, and LocalBusiness schema markup on the website. Google states that local results are determined primarily by relevance, distance, and prominence.

How long does it take to rank in Google Maps in Pakistan?

A newly claimed and verified Google Business Profile in Pakistan typically begins appearing in map results within two to six weeks, assuming the business name, address, and phone number are consistent everywhere Google can find them. Competitive commercial categories in Karachi and Lahore take longer, usually three to six months, and depend heavily on review volume and citation consistency rather than on website content.

Is a Google Business Profile more important than a website for a Pakistani small business?

For a business serving customers in a specific city, the Google Business Profile usually delivers enquiries sooner than the website does, because it places the business directly in Maps and the local pack at no cost. The website remains necessary, because Google cross-references it to verify the profile's claims and because it is the only asset the business fully owns. Treat the profile as the faster channel and the website as the durable one.

Why does my business rank for its own name but nothing else?

Ranking only for your own brand name means Google has recognised the business as an entity but has not associated it with any service or product category. This usually points to missing service pages, absent LocalBusiness and Service schema, or a homepage that describes the company without naming what it sells in plain language. Fix the category association before pursuing broader search terms.

Should a small business in Pakistan use a website builder subdomain?

No. Hosting on a builder subdomain such as a Canva or Wix address means all accumulated search authority belongs to the builder's root domain rather than to the business, and the business cannot migrate later without losing it. A registered .com or .pk domain costs a few thousand rupees a year and is the single cheapest permanent asset a Pakistani small business can own.
