Quick answer: Zero-click searches are Google queries that end without the user visiting any website, and they now account for 68.01% of US searches according to SparkToro's 2026 study. You win them by becoming the source the answer is built from: publish self-contained answers, mark them up with structured data, and measure impressions and citations instead of clicks. The clicks are not coming back, but the visibility is still winnable.
The number in this title is already out of date
SparkToro analysed Similarweb's US desktop and mobile panel for January to April 2026 and found that 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click. The 60% threshold fell back in 2024. Zero-click searches gained 7.5 percentage points in 24 months, the fastest acceleration in a decade.
Most teams respond by chasing the shrinking third. That is the wrong move. The click is no longer the unit of value, and the businesses winning right now optimised for something else two years ago.
This post covers what zero-click searches actually are, why AI Overviews accelerated them, why a featured snippet win can legitimately cost you traffic, and the exact metrics we report at Loop2Tech instead of click-through rate.
What zero-click searches actually are
Zero-click searches are queries where the user gets what they needed on the results page and never visits a site. Google answers the question in place, using content it crawled from pages that receive nothing in return.
Three surfaces drive this. Featured snippets lift a paragraph, list, or table into position zero. Knowledge panels answer entity questions from the knowledge graph. AI Overviews generate a synthesised answer from multiple sources at the top of the page.
The critical distinction is between a zero-click search that mentions you and one that does not. A user who reads your answer in an AI Overview, sees your brand cited, and never clicks has still been reached. A user who reads a competitor's answer has not. Both count as zero-click. Only one is a loss.
Why AI Overviews accelerated the collapse
AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of searches, and when one appears it cuts click-through rate by nearly 60%, per the same SparkToro analysis. That single feature explains most of the recent acceleration.
Pew Research measured the effect independently. Tracking 68,879 Google searches across 900 US adults, Pew found that users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% where none did. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary itself.
Read that last figure carefully. Citation links inside AI Overviews are not a traffic channel. Treating them as one leads teams to optimise for a click that statistically will not happen.
The three outcomes of any search
Every query now resolves into one of three states, and conflating them is why most zero-click reporting is useless.
| Outcome | What happens | Business value | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click | User visits your page | Full: traffic, conversion, retargeting | GSC clicks, analytics sessions |
| Cited zero-click | Your content answers, brand shown | Partial: awareness, authority, branded demand later | GSC impressions, AI citation tracking |
| Uncited zero-click | A competitor answers | None | Invisible in your reporting |
The third row is the dangerous one. Uncited zero-click searches leave no trace in Google Search Console, so a dashboard showing stable numbers can hide steady share loss.
Why winning a featured snippet can cost you clicks
Winning a featured snippet sometimes reduces your traffic, and that outcome is often still correct. When your answer is complete enough to satisfy the query in place, the user stops. You bought visibility with a click you will never receive.
Across the AEO audits we run at Loop2Tech in Karachi, Pakistan, this is the single most misread pattern in Search Console. A page moves to position one, impressions rise, clicks stay flat or fall, and the team concludes something broke. Nothing broke. The page started winning a surface that does not send traffic.
The decision that follows matters more than the diagnosis. For a definitional query ("what is llms.txt"), accept the zero-click outcome and optimise for brand mention. For a commercial query ("AEO agency Karachi"), deliberately withhold the complete answer from the snippet-eligible block so the click remains necessary. We make that call per query, not per site.
How to win zero-click searches in five steps
Winning zero-click searches means becoming the source the answer is assembled from. The Princeton and Georgia Tech GEO study found that adding citations, quotations, and statistics lifts visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%. That is the mechanism.
- Answer in the opening passage. Put a complete, self-contained answer in the first 200 words, before any context. Our guide to answer-first content covers the retrieval reason this works.
- Name the subject in every section. Write "AI Overviews pull from indexed pages", never "they pull from". A passage lifted alone must still make sense.
- Attach evidence to every claim. One number, one named system, or one documented source per key assertion.
- Mark it up. Article, FAQPage, HowTo, and Speakable make your structure machine-readable. Our breakdown of which schema types actually matter narrows it to six.
- Build the entity, not just the page. Consistent brand signals let engines attribute an answer to you by name, which is the whole return on a zero-click impression.
The HTML pattern that wins answer surfaces
A snippet-eligible answer block is a heading that states the question and a 40 to 60 word paragraph that fully answers it, with no dependency on surrounding text.
<h2>What is a zero-click search?</h2>
<p><strong>A zero-click search</strong> is a Google query that ends
without the user visiting any website, because the results page
answers the question directly through a featured snippet, knowledge
panel, or AI Overview. Zero-click searches accounted for 68.01% of
US Google searches in early 2026.</p>
Two details do the work. The subject is restated inside the paragraph rather than inherited from the heading, and the claim carries a number. Strip away every other element on the page and that block still stands as a correct, quotable answer.
How to measure zero-click searches in Google Search Console
Google Search Console does not report AI Overview impressions separately. AI Overview data is folded into your standard Search performance totals with no filter to isolate it, which means you cannot query zero-click performance directly. You infer it.
The signal is divergence. Filter to a query cluster, set the comparison window to 90 days, and look for queries where impressions climbed while clicks stayed flat or fell. That gap is your zero-click exposure. A page holding position three with rising impressions and falling clicks is being summarised, not ignored.
Pair that with direct citation tracking, prompting ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini with your target questions and recording whether your domain appears. Our method for tracking AI citations and share of voice sets out the cadence. Search Console tells you that you were summarised. Citation tracking tells you whether you were credited.
The metrics we report instead of click-through rate
We stopped reporting CTR as a headline metric in client dashboards. It now measures how often Google failed to answer the query itself, which is not a performance indicator for the client's content.
Three metrics replaced it. Citation share is the percentage of target questions where your brand appears in an AI answer. Impression share on answer-intent queries tracks visibility on questions you can realistically own. Branded search volume is the honest lagging indicator: if zero-click exposure is working, people search your name more.
Branded search is the one that convinces skeptical founders. A zero-click impression that plants your brand generates a branded query later, and branded queries convert at rates unbranded traffic never matches. Google's own documentation is blunt that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, only that a page be indexed and snippet-eligible. Visibility is earned by content quality and entity strength, which is exactly what our AEO, GEO and SEO services are built around.
Where this fits with everything else
Zero-click optimisation is not a separate discipline bolted onto SEO. Answer engine optimisation targets direct answers, generative engine optimisation targets synthesised ones, and classic SEO still governs whether you are indexed at all. We mapped the boundaries in AEO vs GEO vs SEO.
Two adjacent pieces close the loop. Getting the structure right for Google's answer surfaces is covered in our guide to optimising content for AI Overviews, and the entity work that makes attribution possible is in our guide to building a knowledge graph presence. Together with citation tracking, they form the system that makes a zero-click impression worth something.
Do these three things this week
Pull your top twenty queries in Google Search Console and flag every one where impressions rose and clicks did not. That list is your zero-click exposure, and it is almost certainly larger than you expect. Rewrite the opening 200 words of those pages into self-contained answers with a number attached.
Then run those same queries through ChatGPT and Perplexity and record whether your brand appears at all. If you want the audit and the tracking run properly, our AEO, GEO and SEO team does this as a standing programme. Tell us which queries you are losing and we will show you who is being cited instead.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage of Google searches are zero-click?
Zero-click searches accounted for 68.01% of US Google searches between January and April 2026, according to SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb panel data. The figure crossed 60% in 2024, meaning zero-click searches gained roughly 7.5 percentage points in 24 months. Fewer than one in three Google searches now sends a click to the open web.
How do I get my brand mentioned in an AI Overview?
To appear in a Google AI Overview, publish a self-contained answer in the opening passage of a page, attach a verifiable statistic or named source to each claim, and mark the page up with Article or FAQPage structured data. Google requires only that the page be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Consistent entity signals across your site and third-party profiles then let Google attribute the answer to your brand by name.
Is a featured snippet better than ranking first?
A featured snippet gives more visibility than the first organic result but usually fewer clicks, because the answer appears on the results page itself. For definitional and informational queries, take the snippet and treat the exposure as brand-building. For commercial queries where the click drives revenue, ranking first with an incomplete snippet block often produces better business outcomes than owning position zero.
Why did my traffic drop even though my rankings improved?
Rising rankings with falling traffic almost always means an AI Overview or featured snippet now answers the query above your result. In Google Search Console this shows as impressions climbing while clicks stay flat or decline. The page did not lose relevance, it started winning a surface that does not send traffic, and the correct response is to measure citation share rather than trying to recover the lost clicks.
Should small businesses still invest in SEO in 2026?
Yes, but the return arrives as visibility and branded demand rather than raw sessions. With 68% of searches ending without a click, content that gets cited in AI answers builds recognition that converts through branded search later. Loop2Tech, a technology studio in Karachi, Pakistan, measures this through citation share and branded search volume rather than click-through rate, because those metrics reflect what search actually delivers now.
